It had been closed for two months for remodeling. The Municipalidad de San Jose did a nice job with the new concrete street and landscaped pedestrian areas.

Also, the bridge between Turrubares and Orotina has collapsed, according to La Nacion, killing four people. Many people used this route, from Ciudad Colon-Puriscal-Orotina, to avoid the maddening traffic on the Cerro del Aguacate en route to Jaco. The old bridge was a single-lane suspension bridge over the Rio Sucio Tarcoles, and frequently captured tourists’ attention for its rickety, peacemeal appearance.

This large sea creature is in danger of extinction. However, the number of nesting sites is up this year, giving researchers hope that the turtle is on the rebound.

The turtles are the area’s claim to fame, but there are other reasons to visit Tortuguero, too. Here’s an article by Nick Majerle.
