Pilgrimage Cancelled

The annual pilgrimage procession known as La Romeria has been cancelled this year, in an agreement between Costa Rican health officials and the Catholic Church.

Officials stated fears of spreading the H1N1 virus at the public event, which is typically visited by hundreds of thousands of people. The event culimnates on August 2nd, and draws foot traffic from around the country. The pilgrims walk to the Bascilica de Los Angeles in Cartago to pay homage to La Negrita, the patron saint of Costa Rica.

This is the first time in 227 years that La Romeria has been cancelled.
