New Life for Barrio Escalante
One of San Jose’s prettiest neighborhoods, Barrio Escalante, is getting a facelife with “urban acupuncture” over the next five years. The project will include making the area next to the train tracks a friendlier place to walk, increasing sidwalk space and planting trees on Avenida 9, encouraging restaurant growth along the street that runs north from Bagelman’s, and more. I look forward to the results. A more pedestrian-friendly, tree-shaded neighborhood is just what the capital city is lacking. With interesting shops, restaurants and the neighborhood’s characteristic architecture, Barrio Escalante is poised to become a new urban hotspot. Once again, I am impressed with the Municipalidad de San Jose’s initiative in urban renewal. Little by little, the capital is becoming a destination by itself.
