admin, that's a good point. I frequently read the New York Times' travel page, and their idea of budget travel is spending less than $200 a day, per person. And, for true budget travelers, there's always camping. I've camped on the beach in Costa Rica many times for free, and there are also privately run campgrounds in some towns where you can set up for a few dollars.

The meaning of budget is relative, specially in this day and age. I asked the reader a price range as a basis to make the list and she mentioned $80-$120. Travel and Leisure Magazine recently posted a list of budget resorts and the two CR resorts listed had rates of $65 and the other of $200 but that is the Travel and Leisure readership. I guess they would normally spend $300-$500 per night. A private room in a hostel in Madrid or London will cost 65 euros. I would say in CR anything around $30 is a private room with bathroom, probably no AC, maybe hot water, a fan and a TV. Last year in Puerto Jimenez I rented a room with that description and cost me $22.

Nice list, but I wouldn't call anything over $30 "budget." A new category, perhaps? Hostels, Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury.
