Budget hotel recommendations in Manuel Antonio

One of our FB readers requested a recommendation for a budget hotel in the Quepos-Manuel Antonio area, in the $80-120 range. Rates go down during the green season May-November. Check with the hotel for rates, dates and special packages. Here are a few we put together and added some more options. (Thanks to Kimberly for several of the recommendations and comments.)

Hostels:
Vista Sirena Hostel. Great hosts, views, centrally located to MA and Quepos.  If they want a true “hotel”, then one of the best bargains is Blue Monkey. Not much in the way of amenities or luxury, but centrally located, nice people and many times they offer “name your own price”. Bargain rates for sure.

Budget
Best Western Kamuk in Quepos, rates start at around $75
Babaloo Inn looks mostly at the rainforest, but has bargain rates. some start at $120
Verde Mar. rates starting at around $60 in the low season. It is right on the beach, pretty rare in the area since most hotels are not beachfront
Villas Lirio, starting at around $190 breakfast incl, pool, nice rooms

Luxury
Hotel Makanda would definitely not be considered a budget hotel in a normal tourism climate, but with tourism slow, $400pn villas can be gotten for $300pn during high season, with a full breakfast delivered to the room, which is SOOO luxurious, with great views of ocean and wildlife.

For more information of the area search our site.

We are not a travel agency but it helps us if you mention Costa Rica Traveler as the source of your information when booking your hotel. Thanks for reading.

Nice list, but I wouldn’t call anything over $30 “budget.” A new category, perhaps? Hostels, Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury.

The meaning of budget is relative, specially in this day and age. I asked the reader a price range as a basis to make the list and she mentioned $80-$120. Travel and Leisure Magazine recently posted a list of budget resorts and the two CR resorts listed had rates of $65 and the other of $200 but that is the Travel and Leisure readership. I guess they would normally spend $300-$500 per night. A private room in a hostel in Madrid or London will cost 65 euros. I would say in CR anything around $30 is a private room with bathroom, probably no AC, maybe hot water, a fan and a TV. Last year in Puerto Jimenez I rented a room with that description and cost me $22.

admin, that’s a good point. I frequently read the New York Times’ travel page, and their idea of budget travel is spending less than $200 a day, per person. And, for true budget travelers, there’s always camping. I’ve camped on the beach in Costa Rica many times for free, and there are also privately run campgrounds in some towns where you can set up for a few dollars.
