The annual pilgrimage procession known as La Romeria has been cancelled this year, in an agreement between Costa Rican health officials and the Catholic Church.
Officials stated fears of spreading the H1N1 virus at the public event, which is typically visited by hundreds of thousands of people. The event culimnates on August 2nd, and draws foot traffic from around the country. The pilgrims walk to the Bascilica de Los Angeles in Cartago to pay homage to La Negrita, the patron saint of Costa Rica.
This is the first time in 227 years that La Romeria has been cancelled.

The measure aims to ease the incredible congestion that plagues the capital’s streets during extended rush hours. The restriction applies from 6 am to 7 pm. License plates ending in 1 and 2 cannot travel in San Jose during those hours on Mondays; those ending in 3 and 4 cannot enter Tuesdays, and so forth. The ticket will cost drivers 5,000 colones until the new Traffic Law comes into effect in September, when fines will rise to 34,700.
La restricción vehicular volverá a aplicarse para el centro de San Josí a partir del próximo martes. La medida pretende aliviar las presas interminables que agobian las calles capitalinas durante las extendidas horas pico. La restricción tiene efecto entre las 6 am y las 7pm. Placas que terminan en 1 y 2 no podrán circular los lunes, las que terminan en 3 y 4 no podrán entrar el casco central los martes, y asé durante los demás déas. Los infractores se expondrán a una multa de 5.000 colones. Sin embargo, cuando la nueva Ley de Tránsito tome efecto en setiembre, la multa subirá a 34.700.

Turtle-nesting season has begun, and thousands of green turtles are expected to arrive to lay their eggs. The spectacle of a giant sea turtle pulling herself out of the surf, digging a hole and then dragging her exhausted body back to sea is truly a must-see while on the Caribbean.
